Keep your head on straight in a world of distraction

We have evolved as a society over time. With that, our standard of living has been improving all along. We have so many connections, through myriad platforms (physical and virtual), ranging from neighbours associations, to instagram followers, and everything in between. Of late, the kind of relationships we share with people have become more transactional in nature, as opposed to personal. With this, we end up having a number of commitments to honour and promises to keep.

Today’s world is shaped in a way where almost everyone has access to a smartphone, and many have access to more than one electronic gadget, not to mention the internet. It has become the order of the day. The kind of productive things that you can do with the technology at your disposal is beyond imagination. At the same time, it can also bring about one’s downfall if he/she falls prey to the distraction trap that it can (and usually does) set up. Fatigue and loss of interest in your daily duties, be they professional, academic or personal, are all the unwanted effects of falling into this trap.
The online world is filled with ads. They keep overflowing like water poured into an already full bucket. They can be a put off, especially if it’s got nothing to do with you. To mitigate distraction, make sure you unsubscribe/mark them as spam (regarding the ones you wish to not see again). Coming to social media platforms, it is best advised that one takes it with a pinch of salt. This regards both the time spent on it, as well as what others have to say on that space. Otherwise, the path you will follow will be like a journey you set to Paris, but end up in Rome. You may have picked up your phone to refer to the notes, but due to the notifications, you end up finding yourself reading through the latest movie reviews. Oops.
All these are distractions that can be avoided, if one stays firm. There are, however, a few other distractions that may be beyond your control. Such as, your neighbour making strange drilling sounds or the construction work happening in the nearby villa. Even worse, someone may come and make an absolute nuisance in the exam hall. In all these scenarios, it’s quite easy for one to lose focus, and the enthusiasm with which you started off with is diminished. One may also lose track of their goals, the list goes on like a cascade.

Let’s now come to the point of this article. How do we keep all the distractions at bay, and head in the right direction? It all starts with your inner self (much easier said than done). You need to be aware of how to control your mind. For that, the best practices to begin with, are the various forms of meditation, yoga and breathing techniques. If this sounds alien to you, it’s high time you make these part of your daily routine. In addition to this, ensure you eat healthy and nutritious food. Sleeping well is another important step that will lead you towards being in the best frame of mind, and to achieve the goals you set.
Speaking of goals, it is essential to pen down a to-do plan every day or on a weekly basis. When confronted with uphill and daunting tasks, this simple technique will make things appear simpler more often than not. The key is to prioritize. When you are at work or doing something important, you will be better off if you keep the phone a couple of meters away from you. Furthermore, mute the notifications for a while (until you take a break).
If you follow these little things, rest assured you will be embarking on the path towards where you want to be. You will be able to overcome not just these little distractions, but other issues that may crop up in your personal life due to disagreements with friends/partners. Remember, in these cases, be the first one to forgive and lend the olive branch, because holding a grudge against someone is only going to cloud your mind, and not the other person’s. Also, don’t forget to socialize with friends, but do it more face to face (if and when the pandemic situation permits).
